The 1st October 2017 a football match in Camp Nou was played without spectators
because all the police was in the street due to the referendum in Catalonia, so
if they had a problem the police couldn’t attend. Another reason was to protest
about democracy. Gerard Piqué (a Barça football player) complained and helped Catalan
people to protest about the referendum.
A lot of people went to schools to vote in the
referendum and to avoid the police taking up the ballot boxes. People held
their hands up because they didn’t want violence but the police started beating
people and picking up the ballot boxes. All started because the government of
Spain forbade people to vote for the independence. Because of this, a lot of
people started to demonstrate and took part in an illegal referendum. The
National Police and Guardia Civil
started to take up the ballot boxes with violence and Els Mossos d’Esquadra who are Catalan helped the population. It was
a terrible day and a historic day too…
